EDDY JACKSON - CHAIR FOR LANCASHIRE SPEAKERS CLUB TOPIC SESSION - A CHRISTMAS THEME

I love the Christmas videos produced by John Lewis, Boots, Sainsbury’s, and Waitrose.

I think that there is real competition between them to produce the most entertaining. For me, the appeal is emotional based upon a sentimental feeling of the Yule Tide seasonal activities.

Do you have a favourite? What do you like?

You may not like the commercialisation, and this leads to an important concept:

Commodification

“Within a capitalist economic system, commodification is the transformation of goods, services, ideas and people into commodities or objects of trade. A commodity at its most basic, according to Arjun Appadurai, is "anything intended for exchange," or any object of economic value”.

The South Lancaster Speaker’s club topics this evening, Wednesday 13 November are based upon these Christmas pop song themes.

I hope you enjoy your topic and that you quickly find your voice to express your thoughts.

Good luck!

Eddy Jackson
